Community Partners
Communities are central to HOT’s mission. These partners, including community organizations, women’s groups and other grassroots groups, ensure that our efforts are tailored to the unique needs and contexts of the region and areas we serve. By collaborating with local partners, we transform local insights into actionable data, creating maps that are accurate and create meaningful, sustainable change.
We seek out local partners who are interested in learning and using geospatial data to solve their local problems, adding on-the-ground knowledge and expertise to our mapping initiatives. OSM groups ensure that HOT’s work is grounded in inclusivity and empowerment, enabling volunteers and community members to prioritize their local issues and be a voice in the decision-making process that impacts their lives. Through our work with OSM groups, we are working towards creating a world where no one is left behind.
How we can partner together
- Provide technical support on HOT's projects through programmatic grants or subcontracts to help them undertake larger and more impactful projects that contribute to humanitarian goals.
- Support local groups with microgrants through our hub granting program.
- Support and amplify OSM mapathons, workshops, etc. to encourage volunteer participation, and help raise awareness about the importance of open mapping in humanitarian contexts.
- Collaborate to initiate and execute local mapping projects to improve local planning and resource allocation and prioritizing community needs, e.g., mapping essential infrastructure, services, and vulnerable areas within the community.
- Training to community members on how to use OpenStreetMap, mapping tools and building mapping skills among young people to foster a sense of community involvement and ownership.
- Support disaster preparedness and response using maps can identify evacuation routes, emergency shelters, and high-risk areas.

OSM Sri Lanka Community and impact of HOT Micro Grants for the continuation to contribute to develop open geo-spatial data
Since May 2018, the HOT Microgrants program has supported the OSM Sri Lanka Community to conduct a series of workshops and training programs throughout the country, including underdeveloped rural areas, Universities, and Local Authorities.
